Daybreak uses Stop Motion Animation

Stop-motion animation is a sequence of pictures that are photographed one frame at a time. In between each still photo a physical object in the scene is moved slightly and photographed once again. When played back rapidly, an illusion of movement is created.

Recently this technique was utilized by Daybreak TV to produce a short video celebrating the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ, also called Corpus Christi. For centuries a Eucharistic procession has accompanied the feast of Corpus Christi. At the end of Mass the Bishop or priest will display the Blessed Sacrament in a monstrance and walk down the street followed by parishioners, as they sing and recite prayers. This procession with the Eucharist shows that God is present in the world and that we, as a faith community journey together toward heaven.

In order to portray this prayerful procession using Stop- motion animation, sets needed to be created. Ashley Czarnota, a videographer and editor at Daybreak TV, took on this project. Using cardboard boxes, construction paper and a hot glue gun, she built a neighborhood street, the interior of a church complete with people in the pews, an outdoor altar, folks for the procession and a monstrance. Over 600 still pictures were taken to create this one minute video, which was edited by using Photoshop and a Premiere Pro editing system.
