Bishop Kmiec ordains two men to the priesthood

Father Biernat, right, Father TourvilleSt. Joseph Cathedral in downtown Buffalo was the setting Saturday, Aug. 8 for the ordination to the priesthood of Father Ryszard Biernat (far right) and Father David Tourville.

A native of Poland, Father Biernat has been in the United States for seven years.  The second youngest of nine children, he grew up on a farm.  One of six children, Father Tourville was born in Rochester and moved to Batavia when he was 10.

Bishop Kmiec asks for prayers for storm victims

Flood damage at Our Lady of Mount Carmel ChurchBishop Edward U. Kmiec is asking Catholics throughout the Diocese of Buffalo to pray for the victims of last weekend’s heavy rain storms as they begin the arduous clean-up process.

“I am praying for those who lost their lives, the injured and those whose properties were affected,” Bishop Kmiec said. “I encourage the faithful of the diocese to remember the victims in their prayers and during Masses in all of our parishes this weekend.”

St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute prepares to dedicate new science labs

New science wing at SJCISt. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute will dedicate of the Cullen Center for Excellence in Science and Residence for the Brothers of the Christian Schools will take place on Sunday, Aug. 30 at 1 p.m. on the walkway entering the new building, located on campus at 845 Kenmore Avenue in Buffalo. Bishop Edward U. Kmiec will preside over the dedication and blessing of the three-story facility.

Following the brief dedication, the new science center will be made available to the public to explore, with St. Joe’s students on hand to serve as tour guides in a casual, open house style setting from 1:30-3:30 p.m.
